Efficacy of Pinching and Planting Density in Pot Cylture of Hibiscus syriacus L .

Abstract

|
These experiments were carried out to investigate effects of hand-pinching and pot-planting density on the growth and flowering of Hibiscus syriacus cultured for potted plants.
One-time hand-pinching was enough to retard the shoot growth in ´Hanoi-tanshim´, whereas ´Hwarang´ requires it twice. Two cultivars (´Hwarang´ and ´Hanoi-tanshim´) showed no significant difference in leaf length, leaf width and nodal length after handpinching. The number of flowers drastically reduced after hand-pinching for two cultivars, ´Hwarang´ and ´Hanol-tanshim´.
Growth and the number of flowers of potted plants were retarded as the number of plants per pot increased. Ornamental quality was most outstanding when 6 plants were planted per pot, whereas 1 or 2 plants per pot showed the poor looking.
